TCG Events

"TCG is vital for me because theatre is about community. And here is a community of experts pushing forward to redefine what theatre is. That’s invaluable."
—Kwame Kwei-Armah, Artistic Director of Center Stage Baltimore

TCG regularly convenes various meetings throughout the country, connecting theatre people to the partners, resources, and knowledge they need. From our Fall Forum on Governance for trustees and theatre leaders to the largest in-person theatre conference in the U.S., TCG strives to be that “catalytic center of a network of theatre people” from our vision statement. We believe that TCG thrives by bringing the extraordinary people of our theatre field together.

Recent Event: 2018 TCG National Conference

From June 14-16, 2018

The TCG National Conference took place in St. Louis, MO, a city whose political and cultural narratives have in recent years been amplified on the national stage. In an era of media saturation, sound bites, and “fake news,” theatre makers continue to reflect the many nuances and complexities of the human experience in the stories we tell. In a widely watched TED talk, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie said: “I’ve always felt that it is impossible to engage properly with a place or a person without engaging with all of the stories of that place and that person.” How do we use our art form to uncover the deep (and often, messy) truth of people, places, and identity? How do we go beyond the single story? With St. Louis as our inspiration and our gathering place, TCG attendees engaged in discussions about authenticity in our artmaking, examining and improving the ways we prepare and support a generation of new leaders, developing organizational cultures that are ever more inclusive and forward-looking, and elevating the cultural legacy of those that came before us. Recent Event: 2017 TCG Fall Forum on Governance

November 10-12, 2017

Since its founding, the not-for-profit professional theatre field has been defined by risk, both financial and artistic, and by the leaders who have bravely navigated their theatres through the ebb and flow. Yet lately, it’s apparent that our field may be facing a more significant sea change, and for some of us, that may mean it’s time to rock the boat. Can our business model stay afloat during a generational shift in leadership and a (r)evolution in the relationship with our audiences and communities? How can trustees help steer their theatres through uncertain waters, to not just survive, but thrive? From November 10-12 in New York City, trustees and theatre leaders explored these questions at the 2017 Fall Forum on Governance: Turning the Tide. Attendees engaged with thought leaders and heard case studies from peers on three main tracks: managing successful leadership transitions; sharing new strategies in audience engagement and community development; and rethinking the traditional business models of our field. From visionary conversations about radical philanthropy to tool kits for succession planning, participants walked away with new governance strategies and tactics to turn the tide and help their theatres flourish.

Recent Event: 2016 TCG Fall Forum on Governance

November 11–13, 2016

Theatre leaders have long known the value of research in guiding decisions, measuring progress, and demonstrating the impact of our ephemeral art form. But has this age of Big Data improved our capacity to make strategic choices, or have we lost the signal through the noise? If it’s true that we measure what we value--and then value what we measure--how can we be sure we’re measuring what really counts...and then putting it into practice? From November 11-13 in New York City, an intimate group of trustees and theatre leaders explored these questions at the 2016 Fall Forum on Governance: Measuring Up. Attendees engaged with thought leaders on emerging research trends in the theatre field and beyond, and heard case studies from peers that have successfully integrated mission-driven and data-informed decision-making into their board and staff leadership culture. There were hands-on sessions for attendees to put theory into practice through innovative online tools and platforms, and discussions on how research can help shift our field-wide challenges.

Recent Event: 2016 TCG National Conference: Theatre Nation

June 23-25, 2016

From June 23-25, the 2016 TCG National Conference: Theatre Nation brought together over 1,000 theatre practitioners from across the globe for performances, knowledge sharing, and thought-provoking speakers. We built on the success of the 2015 Cleveland Conference--our highest-rated in history--by further innovating programming like our Skills-Building Workshops and At the Intersections arcs, empowering deeper professional development and peer connection. At the heart of this work lies TCG’s vision of “A better world for theatre. A better world because of theatre.” We brought that activist spirit to visit legislators on Capitol Hill. We invited practitioners from across the world, because we know members of our Theatre Nation are global citizens. We continued our conversations on equity, diversity, and inclusion, and we put a spotlight on the artistry that is the center of all our work. Thank you for joining us in Washington, DC for Theatre Nation. Learn more here.
